How Long Does a Smog Check Take and What to Expect

A smog check is usually quick, but the trip can feel longer if you do not know what happens after you hand over the keys. For most cars, the inspection itself takes about 10 to 20 minutes. With check-in, waiting, payment, and certificate processing, plan for 20 to 45 minutes total at the station.
The exact time depends on your vehicle, your state’s rules, the station’s workload, and whether the car passes the first time. A newer car with no warning lights may be in and out fast. An older vehicle, a busy test-only station, or a car that needs a more detailed inspection can take longer.

The short answer is that most smog checks take under an hour
If everything goes smoothly, a smog check is one of the shorter vehicle-related errands. The technician checks your vehicle information, connects test equipment, performs required inspections, records the results, and gives you the paperwork.
A typical visit often looks like this:
Part of the visit | Typical time |
Check-in and paperwork | 5 to 10 minutes |
Vehicle inspection and testing | 10 to 20 minutes |
Results, payment, and certificate processing | 5 to 15 minutes |
Total visit | 20 to 45 minutes |
Some visits take less time. Some take closer to an hour, especially if several cars are ahead of you.
A smog check can also take longer if the technician needs to confirm readiness monitors, inspect emissions equipment more closely, or explain a failed result. If your vehicle does not communicate properly with the testing system, that can add time too.
The best estimate is simple: leave yourself at least 45 minutes. If you are going before work, during lunch, or on a registration deadline, build in extra time.
